Our Animals

We put a lot of time and effort into raising our animals thoughtfully and lovingly. Good management of the land and the animals on it today is our contribution to a healthier world for the next generations.

Pastured Pork

All our babes are born and raised on the farm. They’re mixed heritage breeds and pure-bred Berkshires, all of which are known for good flavor and marbling, as well as their resiliency on pasture. From birth they’re free to roam and root around on pasture. To ensure the pasture doesn’t get too damaged, we move their paddocks before the good dose of disturbance turns into destruction.

Being monogastric animals, pigs require a higher amount of energy (i.e., carbs) than they can get on greens alone. So we also provide a corn and soybean mixture we make on the farm with corn our brothers produce locally using conservation methods, like no-till planting and utilizing cover crop. We don’t give our babes any unnecessary hormones or antibiotics, but we do provide medicine if needed (which is rare).

Pastured Poultry

Our chicks arrive at the farm at 1-2 days old. Once baby peeps have grown to develop adult feathers to withstand the weather, they are put out on pasture in a mobile coop that is moved twice daily. In addition to what they glean off pasture, we provide locally produced soy-free feed.

The most popular meat bird is the Cornish Cross, whether they’re raised in confinement or on pasture. The speed at which they grow is a huge advantage to the farmer in the amount of time you can get a product to market, so it makes sense. However, after raising them for a season we decided to go in a different direction.

The Cornish Cross breed was developed to grow fast. So fast, that their musculature out paces their skeletal structure and the nervous system can’t keep up. That means they’re too heavy for their joints causing them sit most of the time and they have high rates of heart failure. Since health and nutrition is so important to us, in both humans and animals, we’ve chosen a slower growing, more active breed to raise, the Freedom Ranger. They provide a product we feel sure you’ll love!
